Hans went searching for an adventure.
And two meals a day.
And a pair of real shoes.
But winter arrived, and with it something dark and lonely. But Christmas is coming. And for a Mennonite boy from Ukraine who grew up with nothing and was not allowed to celebrate any religion, Hans learns that the darkest nights fade to sunny days and can bring unexpected gifts.
This illustrated story is about my Grandpa, John (Hans) Hamm,
a Mennonite from Ukraine. Amid the turmoils of World War II, he became adrift from his family. But on Christmas Day of 1943, a strange telegram leads him to something unforeseen.
This story is important to me, not just because it is part of my family's history, but because it is a story about unexpected gifts in unexpected places and reminds us that small miracles are waiting even after the darkest nights.
